Mixing prints has recently been a popular trend on the runways, in fashion magazines/websites, and increasingly seen on the streets. But for most, this trend is either never attempted or results in a fashion don’t. If the mixing prints look is something you’ve been intrigued by, yet haven’t mustered the courage to put your outfit into action; read on for my mixing prints tips and guidelines.
Tips to master mixing prints:
1. Channel your inner child – Left to their own devices, children mix prints all the time. They choose prints that are aesthetically appealing to them, and try to wear them together for no other reason than they “love it all”. Often, the results can be surprisingly good. I learned this firsthand by watching my seven year old daughter get dressed. The first time I noticed this, I saw her put 2 pieces together which triggered my “There is no way you’re leaving the house in that!” response. After taking a step back and some insistence on her part, I had to admit that it looked pretty good. Who knew? Anyway, the trick is to focus on your intuitive reaction and keep the traditional fashion rules to the side.
2. Balance – Incorporate a solid, neutral color into your look to tie the prints together. The separate prints may already have this color in common. The image above is a great example of this.
3. Hair & Make-up – Keep it simple and sophisticated.
4. Confidence – Without this, what’s the point?
Still scared? Forget mixing clothing prints, and mix in an accessory instead (see image below).
